Travel Medical Insurance

Few people can afford the financial burden of an unexpected injury or sickness while traveling. A medical emergency may require hospitalization or emergency transport home. Expenses for these and other services can be very significant, often much higher than in Canada. In most cases, Provincial Health Insurance Plans will not provide adequate protection for these and other risks. Travel Medical Insurance is designed to cover losses resulting from sudden and unforeseeable events. A Travel Medical Insurance plan can cover many of the following or even moreexpenses resulting from a medical emergency :

•        Hospital room and board charges
•        Emergency room charges
•        Treatment by a physician
•        X-rays and other diagnostic tests
•        Use of an operating room
•        Ambulance service
•        Drugs and medication
•        Rental or purchase of medical equipment
•        Medical supplies
•        Private duty nursing
•        Professional/Paramedical services
•        Emergency dental treatment
•        Emergency transportation
•        Return of vehicle
•        Return of deceased

Travel Medical Insurance plans generally contain a pre-existing condition. This clause typically excludes coverage for the continuing treatment, recurrence or complications relating directly or indirectly to a medical condition for which a consultation or investigation was made, or treatment was received for a certain period prior to travel (usually between three months and one year). Some medical conditions are also excluded from coverage outright and/or result in plan ineligibility.
