Dangers of Grow Op Dwellings

Homes renovated to clean up mould and indoor air problems caused by grow ops may still be hazardous to inhabit. Frequently, dwellings must be demolished because they cannot be brought back to a state where they are fit to live in. There are many kinds of damage caused to buildings used as grow ops as well as dangers to public health and safety, to occupants of live-in grow ops and to future owners of grow op dwellings:

Marijuana Grow Ops

A marijuana grow operation is a building that has been modified in order to grow large amounts of marijuana, which is sold on the street by criminal organizations.Structural changes are made in order to supply light, water and ventilation to the plants. After the occupants have moved the grow op to a new location, major repairs are frequently required in order to make the building habitable once more. Occasionally the building is irreparably unsafe, which results in its demolition.

Identity Theft

Although you may not be able to prevent Identity Fraud entirely, the best defense is to minimize a criminal’s opportunity to obtain your personal information.

Protect your credit card number. Don’t give your credit card number on the phone or by electronic mail, unless you have initiated the contact or know the person with whom you are speaking.

Pay attention to your billing cycle. If credit card or utility bills fail to arrive, contact the companies to ensure that the bills have not been illicitly redirected.

Running Home Based Business?

If you operate any type of business or commercial activity from your personal residence, your home insurance policy is most probably not protecting you.  The typical personal property policy was never intended to cover any kind of business operation and therefore has minimal, if any, coverage for business stock, business property and, most importantly,  liability.

Automobile Insurance Fraud

The Registered Insurance Brokers of Ontario has recently experienced a number of calls from people who have been caught in an automobile insurance scam.

Working for not for profit organization?

Great!

Did you ever considered of having D & O laibility insurance?

No, please have a careful consideration of the D&O liability after reading the brief information below.

No matter how worthy the cause or how dear it may be to your heart, ask first about your potential liability as a Director. Do the by-laws provide for indemnification of Directors found liable for their acts or omissions? Is insurance in place to fund this? If not, you could be required to pay damages out of your personal assets.

My vehicle Skid...Why is that my fault?

Some feel it is just not “fair” that losing control on black ice, smashing your car and perhaps others, should count as an at-fault accident, often with resulting premium increases.

Changes to Ontario Auto Insurance

Financial Services comission of Ontario recently announced legislation that will give consumers more choice and flexibility in their automobile insurance protection.  More than 40 revisions to auto regulations have been proposed that give consumers options.  The proposed reforms will help keep insurance premiums affordable by letting Ontario drivers buy coverage that best meets their individual protection needs and budgets.  Drivers could opt for a new standard level of auto insurance coverage that could help reduce their auto insurance premiums, or choose additional levels o

Boaters Must Carry Proof of Competency!

Every boater must now carry  proof of competency.Don’t get caught without one!

Almost 9 million boaters navigate Canada’s waterways each year.  To make boating safer for all, the Canadian Coast Guard launched a mandatory licensing program for pleasure craft powerboat operators in 1999.

Today all boat operators, regardless of age or engine horsepower, must carry proof of competency or risk a $250 fine.   Provincial Police, Conservation Officers and the RCMP are responsible for enforcement.

Sewer Back-Up Vs Flood

What’s the distinction between Flood and Sewer Back-up?

A flood can be caused by spring run-off, melting snow, an overflowing river, lake or stream, or even a swimming pool. Excessive groundwater build-up that enters your home via leaks or seepage is also considered flooding.  Whether aided by wind or an Act of God, damage to your home caused by a flood is not covered.

Careful with GPS!

How Safe are You? GPS technology could help criminals rob your home.

A thief can steal your car in as little as two minutes.  A smash and grab robbery can happen in seconds.  If your car has a GPS device with your home address programmed into it, a thief can rob your home too!

The Cost of Personal Injury Fraud.Who is the victim?

In 2001, IBC studied the cost of personal injury fraud across Canada (except BC, the only province that chose not to participate). Fourteen companies, both public and private, of varying sizes and representing 60% of the insurance marketplace, participated in the study. Personnel reviewed files randomly selected from their records, looking for evidence of personal injury insurance fraud. A total of 4,066 closed claims files with payment were examined, providing IBC with a 3% margin of error.

Insurers must be clear about denying benefits: Ontario court

An insurer must be absolutely "clear and unequivocal" in its denial of benefits, and the word "refusal" in documents to the policyholder would probably help, a recent Ontario court decision suggests.
In Sukhdev Gill v. Economical Insurance Company, the Ontario Superior Court ruled The Economical's mere placing of a 'zero' in an expense column of a document sent to a policyholder, along with an explanation that more documentation was required, did not qualify as an outright refusal to pay the benefits in question.
